First Snow of the Season on My Hill

At about 11:30, when I made a run down the hill, it was overcast but the skies were clear.

A couple hours later, however, some white stuff was fallling from the sky.

At this point, just short of 4 p.m., still melting about as fast as it falls, but at least you can tell there's been snow.

Slowed down the shutter to capture the tiny flakes, so not quite as impressive as it appears, but "Hello, First Snow!"

Mts, cool gifts, funny signs and an Iditarod musher

The view from the parking lot at the Holiday Gift Bazaar at Raven Hall today in Palmer.
I never quite seemed to get into photo mode, maybe cos it was so crowded that there wasn't much room to move around for shots, but lots of neat stuff, some Christmas-y, like these, others Alaskana, and some just plain cool stuff.

Loved these, tho' no clue why I didn't get a shot of his really cool looking coat hanger pieces. Beautiful stuff, and fun.

This booth was crowded, so not the best of pix, but these are house or name signs, most with an Alaskan theme. A gal was sitting there doing the names onto them freehand but never got to talk to her cos they were busy, which was good for them.

Isn't this adorable? No clue what it cost. Something told me the ol' adage of "If you've got to ask, you can't afford it" probably held true in this case.
Back outside and headed to lunch, but first, gotta check out the snow levels on the mountains.

Not quite the picture I wanted, but since I'd have had to climb over a chain-linked fence taller than me to put that tree where I wanted it in the shot, this one worked for me. Click on it and find the little black spots in the tree. Those are birds!

Not only is the food good at the Noisy Goose, aka Colony Kitchen, but they have the most entertaining things on their walls to read, even while waiting for a table, which was when this one was spied.

Meet Chris Lund. I didn't know Chris but since there was an IOFC patch on the back of his jacket, it was a bit of a give-away that he was an Iditarod musher. Only talked briefly -- their table was ready before I got seated -- but was fun to add another name to my musher acquaintance list.

Hatcher Pass, mostly in shades of white and gray

That white stuff is mostly ice! This is on the left as you approach the main Little Su Viewing pull-over. The rock face sorta left is bordering the road. Larger patches of ice along the shoreline, then a few out scattered near or attached to the rocks/boulders.
Main view of Little Su from the bridge, tho', not the viewing platform. Find the big boulder, sorta left lower corner. That's ice clinging to it! Now look below for a closer view.

Just an odd effect, one that I'd think would be tough to create on purpose for humans, but no problem for Ol' Man Winter.

Same boulder left, but wider view. You can see the ice forming on some of the others but, go figure, the frothy water you see sorta flowing center to bottom is river water, still flowing pretty powerfully. Soon, tho', it'll all be covered up by ice and snow... under several layers of ice, actually.

Didn't really notice more than a few spots of snow until I'd turned up the mountain past MotherLode, then more and more right along the road. This batch, the first I had a chance to stop and shoot, was taken as I climbed the grae and not far from where the big viewing pull-over is of the Valley. No snow on the road all the way up to the Lodge area, which was good since I still don't have my studded tires on the car.

Who out there has really thought about snow as camouflage for structures? But, look closely and you'll see the Hatcher Pass Lodge, sorta lower left, and then the red roof, lower right, that is up at the mine area. Can you find the mostly white mine buildings?

This was one of those spontaneous visits, so didn't take much time shooting pix, but always love this view past the Lodge and down into the Valley beyond.

The Hatcher Lodge end of Wasilla-Fishhook, now closed on this end, I assume for the season. The gate was closed, anyway.

Saturday Sunset

Sigh, as usual I wasn't paying attention to the outside and missed the pink on the mountains, tho' the pink in the sky opposite sure made the trees appear to be on fire.

I don't think the sky could quite make up its mind what color to wear tonight, so it wore a mix.

Looking west, it was getting a bit more intense that way (of course, through the trees) as I pulled in the driveway, so hung out outside a while longer. Won't be that long before I'll be scurrying inside fast to escape the cold, I'm sure!

Just pretend all those power lines aren't there....
