Palmer Jaunt

I seem to be living in a Christmas card again right now. This view is looking north from just below the end of my driveway.

The view down Lone Cub.

A bit closer look. I was using the Olympus camera and it's slower to recycle than the Canon, but worked to my advantage here with this nice close up.

Loved the church spire against the sky with the mountains as a backdrop. It's across from Colony High School.

Gee, can you guess where this one was taken?

Rosemary told me once that I needed to remember to take pix of the "real world" here in Alaska occasionally, too, so here's "Real World, Palmer, Trash Day". Taken from the Fred's gas station over there. Gave me a chuckle.
On the way home, having just turned off Palmer-Wasilla Hwy. onto Seward Meridian. Looking north at the Talkeetna Mts.

Just pretty snow pix taken out along Bogart.

Thanksgiving Snow

Yesterday and Today

Yesterday it was raining, raining, raining. Temp near 40F

Today it's been snowing, temp about 33F

Yesterday, one persistant strip of snow clinging to the deck.

Today....back to its white covering.

Ice, Ice, Baby

As weird as it seems to think about Alaska being shut down by rain, the last couple days of a freezing rain has done pretty much that from Anchorage to Fairbanks and places beyond, such as Barrow. It's still coming down, btw, tho' more real rain than icy rain, tho' all it'll take is one evening of sub-freezing temps for it to turn into a sheet of ice.... atop several layers of other sheets of ice. Wild weather. In any case, this is my driveway this morning after the melt had begun. What looks like a normal puddle of ice right is melt atop a frozen puddle, btw.

Closer view of the ice puddle. The black of the driveway is also covered by a sheer layer of ice, so sorta like black ice. It's the sort that you can't see, so it's particularly dangerous. Not in my driveway, true, well, unless I'm walking and don't know it's there to be careful, but for driving.

Wasilla Lake

As always, there's just something about the mountains that speaks to my soul.

Ice on the lake.

What looks like open water is ice where the strong winds we recently had blew all the snow that had covered it away.

Long view across the lake. Once the ice has frozen thick enough, there will be a makeshift hockey and skating rink along the front edge of the lake. It's great fun to just go park and watch people skating (and, yes, falling).

No matter what direction you look, there's still quite a view from my vantage point in the Pizza Hut parking lot.

I took a shot of the picnic area a few entries ago. This time, much of the snow that was there then has blown away.

Maybe I should start a photo folder called "Through My Dirty Windshield". This was a quick shot looking up Crusey just as I was about to turn left and head home. That's Wasilla High School dead ahead of me, while Wasilla Middle is located to the left sorta behind where all those trees are. There's a street light about where the darker portion of Crusey ends that I could go up to and make a left to go home, but I kinda like going past the "Old Wasilla Township" area, even if it does involve more stop signs.

Is it winter yet?

I'm not complaining that the temps are staying reasonably warm for Nov. in Alaska, but the white blanket of snow is sure pretty. Old Town Wasilla.
Still at Old Town Wasilla, the cabin built for the governor in the futile effort to move the state capital to the Mat-Su Valley.

A quick peek down on Wasilla Lake from the Pizza Hut parking lot. There is ice on the surface of the lake but I'm sure it can't be very thick yet. Just hasn't been cold enough.

Still in the parking lot, but looking across the lake's park at the picnic tables and where there is a pathway. The vehicle to the rear is on Parks Highway, which runs past the lake.

Hadn't been over to Lake Lucille for awhile, so decided to make a quick trip over there today while the sun was shining and the temps were in the 30s.

Whoa, did someone go through the ice? Next question, if so, were they nuts? No way it's frozen thick enough to hold someone.

The longer view of the docks from the deck with the broken ice chunks clearly visible to the left of the dock.

Close-up of the ice chunks. What might appear to be open water is actually where the lake water seeped up through the cracks and refroze, but, again, no way this is going to hold anyone's weight.

It's Friday!

Blue Skies....
Beautiful mountains....

And sparkling, snow-covered trees. All is right in my world.

My, what big snowflakes you have, Mother Nature

I must have been bored cos I carried a few props outside with me. This one is one of the little toy huskies they were giving away as prizes at the Iditarod picnic this summer.
Robo-Husky?

And here we have a musher in search of a race. Mush, you husky, mush!

Jacked up the contrast to see what one of my Florida pieces of memorabilia would look like surrouned by snow. It looks...cold!

And finally a few real scenics, complete with some pretty big snowflakes.

One of the bird houses in the back yard.

Artsy moment with the pine cones
