Entering August With a Jaunt to Hatcher Pass

As usual, the trip into the mountain started with a stop at the bridge and viewing spot over the Little Su. I never get tired of this view.
This was the view I'd been hoping for all along, but other than this there wasn't much fireweed showing its colors on the slopes. By next month, of course, it may be a kalidioscope of colors, tho', so there's always something else to look forward to seeing.

Fireweed, nevertheless, was quite plentiful.

This is a blue bird vetch, considered a weed and non-Native. This one was growing along the Little Su.

But, back to the fireweed....

Looking back toward the Valley from one of my favorite pull-overs. Pretty hazy down there, huh, tho' seemed clear and seems clear from my vantage point down there now.

First view of the Independence Mine area. Didn't venture that far today, so just snapped a few pictures before going to the Hatcher Pass Lodge to stuff our faces. Pat Schue was with me, hence "our".

Just some random scenic beauty.

My tough Camry thinks I should send this shot to all it's wimpy FL cousins and show 'em what it's seen and done since leaving nice, flat Florida for the frozen North.

And, another glance down toward the Vally. Really, honest, there are mountains down there across the way. Yep, definitely hazy.

What can I say? I was still looking for fireweed on the mountainside, but the mountains weren't cooperating.

Taken from right outside the entrance to the Lodge, the view back down. I think we need to do a picnic up here one day, gang!

The Lodge was really busy, so we sat near the door but, oh, man, did that sunshine feel good. The breeze outside was decidedly cool.

The sunshine through the window, however, didn't make for good photos. That said, not a bad view of that end of the Willow-Fishhook road all things considered. Lots of traffic heading both ways on it today, too.

Okay, flower people, what's this? Some sort of bottle-brush plant? They were outside the Lodge, closer to the parking area. (UPDATE: Thanks to Pat's efforts searching, I'm going to ID this as Sitka Burnet.)

Rushing water and fireweed....a nice end to a nice, sunny day in the mountains.
